1 in 10 LGBTQ+ youth attempted suicide in past year, survey finds 06.05.2026

A national survey from The Trevor Project, released May 9, found that 1 in 10 LGBTQ+ young people in the U.S. attempted suicide in the past year, while 36% seriously considered it, with rates higher among transgender and nonbinary youth (40%). The report attributes these outcomes to external mistreatment and a discriminatory political climate, noting that 90% of respondents said recent anti-LGBTQ+ laws and debates caused them stress or anxiety. CEO Jaymes Black stated the results demonstrate that negative mental health outcomes stem from how youth are treated, not their identity. The survey of 16,000 youth ages 13-24 also revealed that LGBTQ+ people of color faced higher attempt rates and racial discrimination. However, risk significantly decreased when youth had supportive communities and people in their lives.
