100 uur taakstraf voor chauffeur vuilniswagen van ongeluk waarbij Amerikaanse omkwam 05.03.2026

A garbage truck driver has been sentenced to 100 hours of community service for causing the death of 69-year-old American Cindy Charles in October. The court found the driver at fault for driving against traffic on the Passeerdersgracht in Amsterdam's Jordaan district and failing to ensure the path was clear of pedestrians. Charles, who was in Amsterdam for a dance festival event, was crossing the narrow street when the incident occurred. Despite garbage truck drivers sometimes having exemptions to drive against traffic, the court emphasized the driver's responsibility to see pedestrians. The prosecution had sought 240 hours, but the driver's personal circumstances and the lifelong impact of the accident led to the reduced sentence. Charles' widower advocated for stricter regulations for truck drivers, including a co-driver and audible signals for contraflow driving.
