Advocacy groups urge US to share experimental Ebola drug for outbreak trials 17.06.2026

On June 16, a coalition of advocacy groups, including Public Citizen and Doctors for America, urged the US government to release an experimental Ebola treatment, MBP134, for clinical trials and emergency use. The request was directed to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to combat the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, which has reached 837 confirmed cases and 196 deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Developed by Mapp Biopharmaceutical through a public-private partnership funded by BARDA with at least US$241 million, the monoclonal antibody treatment is recommended by the WHO. While the US has committed the therapy to high-risk Americans, the advocacy groups demand global access and coordination with the WHO and Africa CDC, arguing that medical products developed with public funding should include global access commitments.
