How has financial assistance from family – or lack thereof – impacted you? 19.06.2026

CNN is seeking personal stories from individuals whose financial stability—whether in buying a home, paying for education, starting a business, or coping with job loss—has been shaped by family support or the lack thereof. The request comes amid growing evidence that the traditional American formula of hard work, education, and career advancement is no longer sufficient for many. The rising cost of living has pushed more people to rely on parents and relatives to bridge financial gaps. According to a National Association of Realtors study published last year, about one in four first-time homebuyers said gifts or loans from family were the primary reason they could afford a down payment. The Wells Fargo study also highlighted that nearly two-thirds of parents with young adult children (ages 18–28) are providing financial assistance.
