Union Home Minister Amit Shah launched the Abhigyan app on June 19, 2026, during the 26th All India Fingerprint Conference in New Delhi. Developed by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the app links to the National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS), which stores fingerprint scans of accused, convicts, and prisoners. Demonstrations showed that prints can be matched with the database in just 35 seconds, allowing field officers to conduct biometric scans of suspicious individuals during vehicle checks or street patrols. The app uses two-step authentication and provides access to millions of records, including over 9.91 lakh narcotics offenders and 3.65 lakh human trafficking cases.
