AI could flag issues with council homes sooner 22.06.2026

Researchers at the University of Cambridge, in partnership with Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire District Council, are developing an artificial intelligence tool designed to proactively identify issues in council housing before they escalate. The system is being created as a starting point with hopes for nationwide replication, according to Professor Ronita Bardhan. The tool integrates three distinct data sources into a single risk score for each property: satellite-captured thermal imagery to detect heat loss, conventional housing data like Energy Performance Certificates, and anonymized records of tenant-council interactions. This combination allows the AI to flag properties most likely to deteriorate and identify residents who could be harmed.
