First drug to delay onset of type 1 diabetes made available on NHS 22.06.2026

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) has recommended teplizumab for NHS use in England and Wales, marking a historic milestone in type 1 diabetes management. The drug works as an immunotherapy, targeting the immune system's attack on insulin-producing pancreatic cells. Patients must receive it before symptoms develop, identified through blood tests showing early autoimmune activity. Dima Boichak, now a teenager from Newbury, became one of the first recipients on compassionate grounds after a research study revealed his high risk. His mother Elena described the 14-day intravenous treatment as "hard work" but emphasized the "biggest gift" is time for her son to live normally.
