UN warns of worsening Ebola outbreak and El Niño-driven hunger threat 12h ago

At a Geneva meeting on Monday, UN and aid agency officials highlighted three converging global threats: extreme heatwaves in Europe, an unprecedented Ebola outbreak, and a hunger crisis fueled by El Niño. The current Ebola outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, has become the fastest-growing on record, with 1,048 confirmed cases and 267 fatalities. Dr. Abdirahman Mahamud of the WHO noted that it took only 37 days to reach 250 deaths, compared to 78 days during the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak and 130 days in the 2018-2019 outbreak, underscoring the intensity of transmission.
