IGAD's new regional hub to tackle soil degradation, boost food security 24.06.2026

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) inaugurated a new Soil Health and Fertiliser Hub in Nairobi to address what officials describe as a major threat to agricultural productivity across the region, which includes Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti, Sudan, and South Sudan. The hub operationalizes commitments under the Nairobi Declaration, where African countries pledged to triple domestic production and distribution of certified organic and inorganic fertilisers by 2034, restore at least 30% of degraded land, and ensure 70% of smallholder farmers gain access to quality extension services and soil-specific management advice.
