Going up! What you need to know about Cape Town's MYCiTi fare increase 24.06.2026

The City of Cape Town has announced steep fare increases for its MYCiTi bus service, effective 1 July 2026, pending Council approval of the draft budget on 29 June. The Urban Mobility Directorate cited escalating operational costs driven by fuel price spikes linked to the Middle East crisis, maintenance, parts, and reduced national government support. Since March 2026, the City had absorbed monthly diesel cost overruns of R9.1 million to protect commuters, but officials say this is no longer financially viable.
