Michael Jackson movie becomes highest-grossing biopic of all time 29.06.2026

The recently released Michael Jackson movie has become the highest-grossing biopic of all time, overtaking Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer with $977 million (£739 million) at the worldwide box office. Earlier, it had already surpassed 2018's Bohemian Rhapsody to become the top musical biopic. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the film traces Jackson's journey from his childhood in the Jackson 5 to his reign as the King of Pop, with his real-life nephew Jaafar Jackson playing the lead role. Colman Domingo and Nia Long portray his parents. Upon its April release, the movie earned $217 million globally in its first week, surpassing previous music biopics and becoming Lionsgate's most successful film, ahead of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. It achieved this despite not benefiting from the "Barbenheimer" phenomenon that boosted Oppenheimer.
