The new Lindung 24/7 scheme by Perkeso, Malaysia's social security organization, significantly expands protection beyond workplace accidents, according to researcher Fatin Nadirah of Khazanah Research Institute. Unlike traditional Perkeso models funded mainly by employers, Lindung 24/7 is fully worker-funded, with contributions starting at 0.75% of monthly wages and rising to 1.25% by the sixth year. For workers earning RM3,000 to RM5,000, monthly contributions range from RM22.50 to RM37.50, deducted directly from wages. The scheme covers accidents occurring outside working hours, such as slips and falls at home, sports injuries, and recreational mishaps. Between 2023 and October 2025, 12,306 claims were rejected under the old system for being non-work-related. HELP University economist Chung Tin Fah noted that this coverage could reduce financial shocks for households. In a recent case, Arnold Nathanael Lister from Penampang, who suffered spinal injuries from a fall at home, qualified for immediate benefits including a back implant procedure, temporary disability payments, and rehabilitation under Lindung 24/7. However, Fatin acknowledged that increased contributions reduce take-home pay, particularly affecting low-income employees. She emphasized the need for broader safety net strengthening and wage growth. The scheme primarily benefits workers already covered under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969, leaving self-employed individuals and those in informal employment with protection gaps. Chung stated that the true test of the scheme will only emerge after implementation, requiring continuous improvement.
