The US is hooked on unregulated peptides. But are they effective, or even safe? 04.07.2026

A growing wellness trend involves the self-injection of unregulated peptides like BPC-157, TB-500, and ipamorelin to enhance muscle growth, skin health, and injury recovery. While popular among influencers and biohackers, most of these substances lack sufficient clinical evidence regarding their efficacy and safety. In 2023, the FDA banned several peptides from U.S. compounding pharmacies due to significant safety risks, leading many to source them from dubious international gray markets. However, a potential policy shift is emerging; Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has proposed legalizing the compounding of 14 peptides, and the FDA is scheduled to review manufacturing permissions in July. Experts warn that increased availability through domestic pharmacies does not guarantee safety, as the FDA does not approve specific compounded products, potentially exposing the public to unverified substances before clinical trials can confirm their long-term impacts.
