New ‘AI triage’ feature will be added to NHS app in ‘major overhaul’ of tech 21h ago

The NHS is launching a major technological overhaul, headlined by a new AI triage feature within the NHS app designed to direct patients to appropriate services like GPs, pharmacies, or emergency departments. This adaptive tool uses patient responses to provide detailed condition assessments, aiming to streamline care delivery. The rollout expects to reach 200,000 patients within the next 12 months, with full availability for all users by April 2028. Additionally, the NHS is implementing AI note-taking tools to transcribe patient-staff conversations, a move supported by trials showing clinicians can spend 25% more time with patients. Supported by £10 billion in government funding, these innovations aim to reduce administrative burdens and waiting lists. However, the Royal College of Nursing cautioned that basic IT infrastructure must be improved and emphasized the necessity of patient privacy and professional oversight.
