Early heatwave leaves deadly toll, fuels widespread wildfires across Europe 05.07.2026

A severe heatwave across Europe in late June has triggered a significant public health crisis and an early, destructive wildfire season. Extreme temperatures and hot nights caused a surge in excess deaths, with France recording over 2,025 deaths, Belgium seeing a 39 percent increase, and Spain reporting 1,029 deaths. Vulnerable populations, particularly those aged 65 and older, were most affected. Simultaneously, prolonged drought and high temperatures dried vegetation, fueling widespread wildfires. France has seen approximately 7,000 fires burning 8,700 hectares, while Portugal reported over 7,000 hectares burned in a single incident in Vouzela. Countries like Germany and Croatia also faced significant fire risks, sometimes complicated by unexploded munitions. In response, European governments are implementing advanced technologies like AI and drones, alongside stricter regulations, to manage the increasing frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events.
