In Bình An Village, located in Tân Trụ Commune, Tây Ninh Province, local artisans are preserving a centuries-old drum-making tradition that has been officially inscribed on Việt Nam's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Founded over 150 years ago by Nguyễn Văn Ty, who utilized buffalo hides for drumheads, the craft has evolved into a renowned industry. Artisans follow a rigorous process involving over 20 stages and 200 manual operations, using mature sao wood for drum bodies and buffalo hide for heads. These handcrafted instruments serve various purposes, including religious rituals, lion dances, and school signaling. The village produces over 1,000 drums annually, supplying domestic markets and international customers. This enduring craft serves as a vital symbol of cultural identity, blending masterful craftsmanship with acoustic precision to ensure the legacy of Bình An continues for future generations.
