North Korean leader Kim observes weapons tests from new naval destroyer 05.07.2026

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently supervised weapons tests aboard the 5,000-ton destroyer Kang Kon, a vessel repaired following a failed launch ceremony last year. According to the Korean Central News Agency, Friday’s trials included strategic cruise missile test-firings, main gun assessments, and evaluations of electronic warfare and target-detection systems. After observing from the shore, Kim ordered the vessel to enter active duty within two months. This event marks a significant shift as Kim prioritizes naval expansion and nuclear-armed maritime capabilities alongside his ballistic missile programs. This follows the June commissioning of the Choe Hyon destroyer and Kim's ambitious goal to build two 5,000-ton warships annually. While South Korean officials suggest Russian assistance may have aided these developments, some analysts remain skeptical regarding the actual combat effectiveness of these newly repaired naval assets.
