Dead body found in Paris canal popular with bathers: Police 05.07.2026

On July 4, 2026, French authorities discovered the body of a man in the Canal Saint-Martin, located in northern Paris. The body, which was retrieved from the water by members of the fire brigade, appeared significantly swollen, indicating the individual had been submerged for several days. Prosecutors estimate the deceased was between 25 and 35 years old, though no identity papers were found on the man. This discovery occurs amidst a period of increased water activity, as Paris recently launched a new season of free, supervised swimming in the River Seine. While swimming in sections of the Canal Saint-Martin is permitted on Sundays following a decision by Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire, safety concerns persist regarding urban debris and jumping from bridges. An official investigation into the exact cause of death is currently underway by local prosecutors.
