DR Congo's Ebola cases rise to 1,406 as AU intensifies support 05.07.2026

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a significant Ebola outbreak, with 1,406 confirmed cases and 438 deaths reported since the outbreak was declared in mid-May. The crisis is concentrated in the conflict-affected eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu. Currently, 609 patients are undergoing medical treatment, while 192 individuals have successfully recovered. To combat the spread, authorities have expanded surveillance, contact tracing, and the deployment of medical supplies and ambulances. However, challenges such as regional insecurity, population displacement, and strained healthcare facilities continue to hinder containment efforts. In response, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa arrived on an African Union solidarity mission to meet with President Felix Tshisekedi. This high-level visit aims to strengthen regional cooperation, improve cross-border preparedness, and coordinate a unified African response to this escalating public health emergency.
