Judge rejects Trump bid to delay $5.8M payment to E. Jean Carroll 15h ago

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan has rejected a request from former President Donald Trump to delay his $5.8 million payment to writer E. Jean Carroll. Following the Supreme Court's denial of Trump's appeal regarding the 2023 jury verdict, which found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation, Carroll filed a motion on June 30 demanding immediate payment. Trump’s legal team argued that his new attorney, Josh Halpern, requires additional time to review the case following the departure of former lead counsel Justin Smith. However, Carroll’s lawyers characterized these actions as "dilatory" attempts to slow the legal process. The judge issued a one-sentence order on July 4, requiring Trump to respond to the payment demand by July 7. This specific judgment stems from the 2023 verdict regarding the 1990s assault allegations and subsequent defamatory comments.
