Congress should restrict birthright citizenship, House speaker says 11h ago

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, stated in a July 5 Fox News interview that Congress must take legislative action to restrict birthright citizenship. This follows a Supreme Court decision that struck down a Trump-era executive order, with Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. ruling that the 14th Amendment protects citizenship for children born to parents unlawfully present in the U.S. Johnson argued that "birth tourism" devalues citizenship and poses threats to national security and the rule of law. While Senator Brett Kavanaugh suggested Congress could establish exceptions, amending the Constitution requires significant legislative and state ratification. Meanwhile, Johnson expressed intent to advance the Trump-backed SAVE America Act through budget reconciliation, despite previous procedural hurdles and Senate rulings that labeled parts of the bill as extraneous.
