India orders Meta to remove ads promoting child sexual abuse 7h ago

The Indian government, through the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, has ordered Meta to immediately disable all Instagram advertisements and content that promote or facilitate child sexual abuse material. This directive follows a BBC Eye investigation which revealed that paid advertisements featuring such illegal material were appearing on the platform in India. The government has issued a formal notice demanding that Meta provide a detailed explanation within seven days regarding how these advertisements were permitted to run. While Meta maintains a zero-tolerance policy and claims to use advanced AI technology to proactively detect violating content, the company denied allegations that it deliberately targets specific users with inappropriate material for revenue. The investigation specifically highlighted how an alias account was served ads linking to Telegram channels where illegal material is sold.
