The Bangladeshi government is set to launch a nationwide initiative offering free and subsidized cataract surgeries to approximately 10 lakh individuals suffering from vision loss due to the condition. State Minister for Health MA Muhit announced this plan following a meeting with Peter Holland, Chief Executive of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). This program underscores the government's commitment, under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's directive, to prioritize restoring eyesight. Further efforts to support this goal include tax reductions on intraocular lenses to lower surgical costs, a move aimed at increasing affordability for lower-income patients. Additionally, Bangladesh will co-host the inaugural Global Summit on Eye Health in November and plans to enhance eye screening and spectacle distribution for schoolchildren, particularly in rural areas.
