'What comes next will be just as grueling': Villagers remain anxious after wildfire in southern France 06.07.2026

On Sunday, July 5, 2026, a fierce wildfire scorched over 540 hectares of scrubland in southern France, specifically impacting the towns of Bezouce, Cabrières, and Lédenon. Driven by extreme heat, drought, and strong winds, the blaze originated near a motor racing circuit in Lédenon before rapidly spreading to nearby residential areas. Approximately 300 firefighters were deployed to combat the flames, supported by seven Canadair water bombers, two Dash aircraft, and a helicopter. Residents, such as Yves Lejeune, faced sudden evacuations, with many sheltering in village halls until late Sunday evening. While 70 residents of Bezouce were eventually permitted to return home around 9 pm, the community remains in shock due to the speed of the fire. Sébastien Paletti, head of the Gard department's fire and rescue service, noted that the initial hours of the operation were particularly difficult.
