Deadly Legionnaires' disease outbreak sparks concern in major US city: Know the symptoms 07.07.2026

New York City health officials have issued a warning regarding a Legionnaires' disease outbreak centered in Manhattan's Upper East Side and the eastern side of Central Park. As of July 6, the NYC Health Department confirmed 23 cases and 17 hospitalizations, though no deaths have been reported. Officials are investigating contaminated cooling towers as the likely source of the Legionella bacteria. This bacterial pneumonia is not spread person-to-person and is not linked to the city's drinking water. Symptoms typically appear two to 14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, difficulty breathing, and muscle aches. High-risk individuals, including those aged 50 and older, smokers, and people with chronic lung conditions, are urged to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms arise. Early diagnosis and antibiotic treatment are critical to preventing life-threatening complications and reducing the mortality risk.
