Zimbabwean football star survives gun attack in South Africa 07.07.2026

Zimbabwean footballer Divine Lunga, 31, survived a gun attack in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Sunday. The Mamelodi Sundowns and Zimbabwe national team defender was driving in the inner-city suburb of Hillbrow with his younger brother when an unknown gunman opened fire on their car, apparently mistaking him for an undercover police officer. Lunga escaped unharmed. South African police spokesperson Captain Tintswalo Sibeko confirmed an attempted murder investigation is underway, but no arrests have been made. The incident highlights South Africa's severe crime problem, as the country has one of the world's highest murder rates. Lunga has played 21 times for Zimbabwe and helped Mamelodi Sundowns win four domestic league titles and the 2021 African Champions League. Neither his club nor national team has officially commented, though Zimbabwe's team posted a picture of Lunga in prayer with the caption "In God we trust."
