Nigeria seeks stronger defence ties with Benin, Niger as Sahel security threat grows 07.07.2026

Nigeria is actively strengthening military cooperation with Benin and Niger to combat the southward expansion of militia groups from the Sahel region. General Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, announced the establishment of a new joint security zone along these borders to counter militants, specifically the Al-Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). This initiative aims to improve cross-border coordination and provide security forces with greater operational flexibility against infiltrating groups. Musa noted that regional collaboration remains a priority despite existing political differences and announced upcoming visits to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Furthermore, the General warned that illegal mining is currently financing these extremist groups. As Nigeria prepares for upcoming presidential elections, security agencies are working to mitigate risks to ensure citizens can participate in the voting process safely.
