Data centers’ energy demand threatens Trump’s “Made in America” plan 07.07.2026

Rising electricity costs driven by massive energy demands from AI data centers are threatening President Donald Trump’s “Made in America” initiative to revitalize domestic manufacturing. In the Rust Belt, manufacturers served by the PJM Interconnection grid are facing significant financial strain. For example, Ohio's Belden Brick Company saw monthly bills jump from $1,600 to $12,000. The Steel Manufacturers Association reports that steel companies are paying tens of millions in additional annual power costs, with electricity representing 20 to 40 percent of total production expenses. While data center construction boosts steel demand, the surge in energy requirements has caused PJM capacity prices to skyrocket from $28.92 per megawatt-day in 2024 to a projected $329.17 by 2026. Consequently, companies like Metallus are facing annual energy cost increases of $15 million, undermining industrial profit margins.
