Indonesia and India deepen strategic ties with defence, critical mineral deals during Modi visit 07.07.2026

During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Jakarta on July 7, 2026, Indonesia and India signed 14 strategic agreements to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. Key developments include significant defence deals, with reports suggesting a US$630 million procurement of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and Astra air-to-air missiles from India. The nations also signed agreements regarding critical mineral extraction, specifically focusing on rare earth magnets and nickel, to secure supply chains. Additional cooperation covers digital public infrastructure through the Indonesia Open Network, cultural preservation of the Prambanan Temple Complex, and educational initiatives, including a new Indian Institute of Management Bangalore campus. While the visit, marked by President Prabowo Subianto awarding Modi the Bintang Adipurna, signals strengthened ties, experts suggest Indonesia must carefully balance these growing strategic links to maintain its traditional non-alignment policy.
