Bangladesh landslides kill nine, including eight Rohingya in refugee camp 07.07.2026

Heavy monsoon rains in southeastern Bangladesh triggered devastating landslides in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps between late Sunday and early Monday morning. These landslides, occurring at four distinct locations, buried shelters under mud and debris, resulting in at least nine deaths. The victims include eight Rohingya refugees and one Bangladeshi man. Rescuers and refugees have recovered several bodies from the collapsed hillsides. Most shelters in these overcrowded camps are constructed from bamboo and plastic on steep, deforested slopes, making them highly vulnerable to seasonal weather. Authorities have already moved approximately 1,000 refugees from high-risk areas and plan to relocate thousands more. As the meteorological department forecasts continued heavy rainfall, concerns grow regarding safety. Additionally, renewed fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine state may drive more displaced people toward the border, complicating the humanitarian situation in the region.
