New Gallup research reveals that American workers who do not regularly use artificial intelligence are significantly more likely to face layoffs. The data shows that 62% of laid-off workers were non-users of AI, compared to only 50% of currently employed workers. This vulnerability is particularly pronounced in the technology sector, where workers using AI monthly or more frequently were three times less likely to be laid off than those using it less often. While 21% of employees reported company downsizing in the first quarter of 2026, only 1% of laid-off individuals explicitly cited AI or automation as the reason for their job loss. Instead, workers cited organizational restructuring and role elimination. This suggests that while AI may not be the stated reason for layoffs, it likely influences corporate restructuring and workforce management decisions.
