Meta could face $1.4 trillion in penalties in social media addiction trial 5h ago

Four U.S. states—California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey—are seeking a combined $1.4 trillion in penalties from Meta in an upcoming trial. The lawsuit alleges that Meta designed Facebook and Instagram algorithms to be addictive to young users, misleading the public about platform safety. Meta has filed a response in the U.S. District Court of Northern California, arguing that the requested sanctions are disproportionate and based on flawed calculations that double-count teen users and monthly usage. The trial, scheduled for August in Oakland, California, will address alleged violations of state consumer protection laws and the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). While Meta denies the allegations, recent landmark verdicts in Los Angeles and New Mexico have already found the company liable for causing harm to users through addictive platform designs and misleading safety claims.
