Liew Chin Tong: Malaysia still on the hook for RM20b in 1MDB debt, with RM51b total liabilities 09.07.2026

Malay Mail

During a parliamentary session in Kuala Lumpur on July 9, Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong revealed that the Malaysian government remains liable for approximately RM20.1 billion in 1MDB debt. Despite having already paid RM42.5 billion toward the fund's total obligations—including principal, interest, and legal costs—the total liabilities stemming from the embezzlement scandal amount to RM51.4 billion. Liew noted that the government is specifically responsible for RM8.9 billion in Government-guaranteed Islamic Medium-Term Note (IMTN) Sukuk, which matures in 2039. While international collaborations have successfully helped Putrajaya recover RM31.3 billion to date, Liew warned that recouping the entire remaining balance is unlikely. Consequently, if no further significant assets are recovered, Malaysian taxpayers will continue to bear the heavy financial burden of the remaining net liabilities resulting from the massive misappropriation of funds.
