A senior Malaysian lawmaker denied reports that fugitive financier Jho Low entered the country for talks related to the 1MDB scandal. Deputy Finance Minister Liew Chin Tong refuted claims from Sarawak Report and The Wall Street Journal that Low had secretly entered Malaysia in 2025 as part of a Chinese delegation to negotiate 1MDB debts or was in talks with authorities on asset returns. Liew confirmed that Malaysia still owes 20.1 billion ringgit of 1MDB's debts, with total obligations at 51.4 billion ringgit. He stated that Malaysia has recovered 31.3 billion ringgit in 1MDB-linked assets and continues legal actions against Low and involved financial institutions. Low, who faces corruption and money laundering charges in the US and Malaysia for allegedly misappropriating at least US$4.5 billion from 1MDB, has denied wrongdoing and his whereabouts remain unknown.
