PN calls for childcare fines review, warns parents could feel pressured to send sick children in 11h ago

The Nationalist Party (PN) has formally called for an urgent review of the fine system within Malta's free childcare scheme. The party warns that current regulations, which require parents to pay fees once a child's allocated absence hours are exhausted, may inadvertently pressure families to send sick children to centers to avoid financial penalties. This practice poses significant health risks to children, staff, and other attendees. The PN highlighted a petition signed by over 1,000 people, including 65 operators representing 80 childcare centers, which proposes treating doctor-certified absences differently. While advocating for responsible health decisions, the PN emphasized that any policy adjustments must include safeguards to prevent abuse of public funds. The party is urging the government to engage in discussions with parents and operators to ensure the scheme's long-term sustainability and effectiveness.
