A viral social media trend is prompting children to microwave NeeDoh toys, gel-filled sensory products, resulting in serious burn injuries across the United States. Whitney Hand of Atlanta described the horrifying moment her fifth-grader screamed after a microwaved NeeDoh SplootSplat exploded, sending scalding, glue-like liquid onto her face and arm. The hot gel was so viscous that wiping it off pulled her daughter's skin away. Dr. Emily Werthman, manager of the Johns Hopkins Burn Center, estimates seeing about a dozen such cases recently, noting that burn centers nationwide are reporting similar incidents, adding up to a large number of injured children.
