Malaysia’s working poor under pressure as living costs outpace income growth, says economy minister 14.07.2026

Malaysia's rising cost of living continues to strain low-income households and the working poor, even as average household income shows growth, according to Economy Minister Akmal Nasir Nasrullah. In a parliamentary reply, he cited data from the Household Income and Basic Amenities Survey 2024, which showed average household income rose from RM8,479 in 2022 to RM9,155 in 2024, representing an annual growth of 3.8 percent. However, this increase is being eroded by rising prices of essential goods and services, as confirmed by the Poverty Line Income (PGK), Cost of Living Expenditure (PAKW), and Household Cost of Living Index (IKSH) from the Department of Statistics Malaysia.
