In a groundbreaking discovery, astronomers have detected a type of sugar called erythrulose in the interstellar medium—the thin clouds of gas and dust between stars. This sugar, also found in raspberries and self-tanners, was identified using two radio telescopes in Spain that analyzed signals from a large gas cloud near the center of the Milky Way. The results, published Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy, mark the latest sugar found in space, adding to previous discoveries like a cousin to table sugar spotted 25 years ago and sugars from asteroid Bennu.
