B.C. residents cutting back as many commit over half their paycheque before it arrives 14.07.2026

A recent MNP Consumer Debt Index report, conducted by Ipsos, has uncovered a troubling financial trend in British Columbia: 58% of residents are caught in a "pre-spent paycheque cycle," where at least half of their income is already allocated to debt payments, bills, and regular expenses before they receive their pay. Linda Paul, a licensed insolvency trustee with MNP LTD, explained that this creates a "rolling shortfall," where each pay period is spent catching up from the last, leaving households vulnerable to even small additional costs. The situation is particularly acute for 43% of respondents who are $200 or less away from being unable to pay their bills each month, a figure that has risen six points since the previous quarter.
