Armenia’s European direction should not be seen as a geopolitical reorientation but as the logical continuation of its foreign policy diversification, says Alberto Turkstra, Project Director of Diplomatic World. The recent visit by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to Armenia and Azerbaijan was both symbolic and practical, demonstrating the EU’s growing strategic interest in the South Caucasus. For Armenia, the visit confirmed high-level political support as Yerevan seeks to reduce excessive dependence on any single external actor, particularly following dissatisfaction with the Russia-led CSTO’s failure to provide security during conflicts with Azerbaijan.
