The Swiss environmental NGO umverkehr launched a people's initiative in April to tax every flight leaving Switzerland, with the goal of using the revenue to provide residents with vouchers for trains, buses, and trams. The levy would start at CHF30 ($37) for short-haul economy tickets and increase with distance and class, with private jets paying at least CHF500 per departure. Supporters have until October 2027 to collect 100,000 signatures to force a national vote, which could happen as early as 2028. The campaign estimates the tax would raise around CHF1.5 billion annually, with at least two-thirds returned to residents as travel vouchers worth over CHF100 per person. Tourists would pay the levy but not receive vouchers, and remaining funds would support night trains and cross-border rail connections.
