People’s photos are helping scientists record marine life in real-time in the Canary Islands 20.07.2026

RedPROMAR, an EU project co-funded by the Government of the Canary Islands, is revolutionizing marine research by turning everyday citizens into scientists. The project invites the public to upload geotagged photos of marine flora and fauna to its platform, creating a real-time record of ocean life. With more than 85,000 validated sightings, scientists have recorded over 5,000 species in the waters around the Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira, and the Azores. Dennis Rabeling, a diving instructor, is a key contributor, uploading thousands of photos and helping discover three previously unknown species, including Gibberula Dennisi, named after him. He explains that by uploading photos, citizens become "another pair of eyes on the water," enabling scientists to identify new species and track changes in the marine environment.
