House passes bill to restrict lawmaker stock trading — but stops short of full ban 6h ago

The House narrowly passed a bill on Wednesday to add new restrictions on lawmaker stock trading, though it falls short of an outright ban. The measure, which passed 232-198 with only 13 Democrats joining Republicans, prevents lawmakers, their spouses, and dependent children from buying new stocks of publicly traded companies while serving in Congress. However, lawmakers can still buy private stocks, keep existing holdings, and maintain certain investment funds. Selling stock would require seven to 14 days advance notice, with violations resulting in a $2,000 fee or 10% of the transaction value, whichever is greater, plus forfeiture of profits.
