Enemalta was 'not expecting' record power demand and heatwave 22.07.2026

Enemalta chair Ryan Fava acknowledged on Wednesday that the authority was surprised by the "alarming" demand on the grid and record high temperatures, which have led to widespread power outages across Malta for three days. Speaking as Valletta bore the brunt of blackouts, disrupting court proceedings like Yorgen Fenech's trial, Fava stated that a cable fault overnight blocked the city's main power supply, requiring excavation work for replacement. He noted that heritage and geographical constraints in Valletta hinder the use of emergency generators. Fava insisted the broader situation is "under control" and that this year's outages differ from 2023's, as heavily impacted areas are those yet to receive cable upgrades under a multi-million euro plan.
