The West Nile virus transmission season is intensifying across Europe, with Greece reporting 21 locally acquired cases as of July 22, 2026, according to the National Public Health Organisation (EODY). Of these, 20 patients developed severe central nervous system involvement, including encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis, while one case presented with mild symptoms. No deaths have been recorded, but 13 patients remain hospitalized. In the past week alone, 14 new locally acquired cases were reported, with the vast majority concentrated in Attica, particularly in municipalities such as Spata–Artemida (6 cases) and Markopoulo Mesogaias (2 cases). Outside Attica, one case was recorded in Larissa and one in Palamas.
