In a striking fusion of tradition and modernity, wakeboarders are now performing on the flooded rice terraces of Yunhe in Zhejiang province, China. The Yunhe Rice Terraces Scenic Area, a national 5A tourist attraction, is home to the largest complex of terraced rice fields in East China. Each spring, before rice transplanting, the terraces are flooded with mountain spring water, creating mirror-like surfaces ideal for wakeboarding. Unlike conventional wakeboarding behind a boat, riders use an electric winch to glide across the shallow water. Jin, a native of Nanjing, notes the serene atmosphere, surrounded by birds, insects, and the sounds of water, contrasting with ocean surfing. He particularly enjoys seeing local farmers in bamboo hats working with water buffalo, a scene he describes as "very Chinese."
