Prime Minister Robert Abela has directed Enemalta to "significantly accelerate" its work on strengthening the power distribution network, following widespread power outages in recent days that he described as "unacceptable." Speaking on ONE News, Abela blamed successive administrations for postponing necessary investment, noting that the current government has already spent an unprecedented €160 million on the power grid over the past three years. He acknowledged that more work is needed and pledged continued intensive investment. Abela attributed the outages to climate change, which has made extreme temperatures more frequent and prolonged, driving electricity demand to record levels and preventing heat dissipation around power cables. He also cited digitalization, automation, and artificial intelligence as factors increasing power consumption.
