A groundbreaking study has revealed that 11 formerly captive elephants released into South African wild reserves have successfully adapted to life in the wild, with their behavior closely mirroring that of elephants who had never experienced captivity. The elephants, which had previously lived in captivity for varying periods, were released into two separate reserves as part of a rewilding initiative. Over five years, researchers monitored their social structures, movement patterns, and foraging behaviors, comparing them to wild-born elephants in the same areas.
