12-year-old boy killed in abandoned mortar shell blast near Bandarban border 02.06.2026

A 12-year-old boy, Satnaing Tanchangya, tragically died from an explosion of an abandoned mortar shell in the Moringajhiri area of Naikhongchhari upazila, Bandarban, near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The incident occurred this afternoon, approximately 100 yards northeast of Border Pillar 39. Satnaing and his family, originally from Myanmar's Rakhine state, had relocated to Bandarban two years prior due to the conflict between the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military. While his parents were working in a jhum field, Satnaing, mistaking the shell for a toy, picked it up, leading to the fatal blast. Authorities, including the Border Guard Bangladesh, are investigating the incident, and local representatives have voiced concerns about the potential presence of unexploded ordnance in border regions.
