Volunteers clear brook to reduce flood risk 03.08.2026

Volunteers in Syston, Leicestershire, took advantage of low summer water levels to clear silt from Syston Brook, aiming to reduce the risk of future flooding after devastating winter floods in January 2024 and 2025. Nineteen members of Syston Community Flood Group donned wellies and shovelled an estimated "two or three tonnes" of "absolutely solid" silt from the concrete-bottomed channel. The Environment Agency removed the silt, which had accumulated and posed a flood risk to nearby homes and businesses.
